['rəʊlbæk; englisch to roll back »zurückrollen«, »zurückdrängen«] das, -s, Bezeichnung für die vom amerikanischen Außenminister J. F. Dulles propagierte Strategie der Zurückdrängung kommunistischer Macht in Mittel- und Osteuropa und Asien. Ausgangspunkt dieses Konzepts, das vor dem Hintergrund der nuklearen Überlegenheit der USA auch die Bereitschaft mit einschloss, einen Krieg zu riskieren, war die Ablehnung der als unzureichend erachteten Politik des Containments. Das Konzept des Roll-back, das eine Änderung der globalen Machtverteilung zur Folge gehabt hätte, wurde nie in praktische Politik umgesetzt.
